Farm Life Week 2

Farm Life Week 2:

Granite Rooster Ranch has been an amazing place to work these past two weeks. We have completed many tasks in our time here. This past week has mostly consisted of the same task. The task was clearing out a path up to the edge of the property. We wanted to make it accessible by mule and tractor. This meant we needed to clear out the trail up to the stone wall. The stone wall marked the property line. We used chain saws, clippers and our hands to make a trail. However the work did not stop once the trail was made. We came across an area that was full of baby trees, brush and large pines, oaks and maples. Our goal was to completely clear the area. We planned ideas for the area. Some of those ideas were, a space for large hammocks, a small grill, tents for camping and a possible outhouse. This area would be a great space away from the chaos on the farm. Over the week, we completed many of our goals. We cleared the space, created a brush pile at the stone wall and made the area accessible by mule and tractor. 

During this past week we have come across a multitude of challenges. One of those challenges was the mule getting a flat tire. This became a problem because it was our mode of transportation around the property. We had to brainstorm to come up with another way. We decided to take another path that would be wide enough for the Jeep. Another problem we discovered was our axe breaking. We were left with two tools for the four of us. This meant it would take a little bit more time to clear more of the area. Out of the challenges we faced, none of them stopped us from pursuing our goal. We worked to problem solve and work through many problems while on the farm. 


It has been rewarding helping out on the farm. Trask and Mel have been very thankful for the work we have put in. What we can get done with four people would take Trask a lot longer. It is a good feeling to help out and support the farm. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity they have given us to work on Granite Rooster Ranch.

 5-17-23 Today we continued our work in the woods. We cleared more of the plateau. We have made significant progress on this area. Trask was able to fill in the beginning of the trail with sand. This helped the mud to settle to so we could get up to the top easier in the mule. We used the chainsaws to clear more brush and smaller trees. We hope to clear the area so the view over the cliff is available. We then made our way to school for sports. The boys went to KUA for their last lacrosse game and I went to Exeter for my final tennis match. Today was another great day working on the farm. Today Hours: 3 hours Total Hours: 42 hours

Farm Life Day 2

 Day 2 5-9-23 Today we woke up at 8:45 and headed out to work at 9am. We headed into the garden where the Christmas tree saplings were planted. We carefully dug them up and separated them into the individual saplings, cleaning off the roots. We transported the saplings across the property to the area we cleared yesterday. We measured plots 6 feet apart and began digging holes. We then planted 40 of the saplings in the plot and watered them. A few puppies joined us in our process and  gave us some puppy love while we worked. After the long 4 hours in the sun with the trees we headed back for lunch and then to school for practice.  Time: 4hrs Total Time: 8.5 hrs

Farm work with friends

  5-8-23 Today we woke up and started our work at 9am. We began clearing brush and debris from an area where the kennel dogs will be able to roam and hang out outside. We worked on clearing out the area and the dead trees for a while before we moved to a different section of the 300 acre property. We began planning the area for planting Christmas trees. We cleared out lots of brush and trees and achieved a clear space to plant in the next few days. We had to take many trips on the tractor to clear the brush to different locations where we saw the multitude of animals. The ranch has pigs, goats, chickens, horses, cows and puppies.  Time: 4 1/2hrs Total Time: 4 1/2hrs
